The Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) is the second-largest game reserve in the world, covering approximately 52,800 square kilometers—about 10% of Botswana’s total land area. It is a remote and untouched wilderness, offering a true off-the-grid safari experience with vast open landscapes, diverse wildlife, and deep cultural history.
Geography & Landscape
Located in central Botswana, CKGR is dominated by semi-arid Kalahari savanna, rolling sand dunes, ancient riverbeds, and vast grasslands. The reserve has several famous landmarks, including:
- Deception Valley – A fossilized riverbed rich in wildlife.
- Piper Pans – Remote salt pans ideal for game viewing.
- Passarge Valley – A scenic area with excellent predator sightings.
- Sunday Pan & Leopard Pan – Popular areas for camping and big cat encounters.
Despite its dry environment, CKGR transforms into lush green grasslands during the rainy season (December to April), attracting large numbers of grazing animals.
Wildlife & Best Time to Visit
CKGR is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, including:
- Lions – Especially the famous black-maned Kalahari lions.
- Leopards, cheetahs, and wild dogs.
- Elephants and giraffes (more common in the northern parts).
- Gemsbok (oryx), springbok, eland, and kudu.
- Brown hyenas, honey badgers, and bat-eared foxes.
- Over 250 bird species, including secretary birds and kori bustards.
Best Time to Visit:
- Green Season (December to April): Best for game viewing as animals congregate in the valleys; lush landscapes and dramatic thunderstorms create incredible photography opportunities.
- Dry Season (May to October): More challenging conditions, but great for predator sightings and the true feeling of isolation.
